How does this online breath test work?

By BreathTestOnline Editorial Team· Updated September 26, 2026 · Wellness guide, not medical advice

Short answer

This free online breath test is a tap-to-time breath-hold timer: tap start, hold your breath, tap stop — get your time, tier, and tips instantly.

Searching for a breath test, breath test online, or online breath test? This is it: no app, no sign-up, no lung test machine needed. The lung test timer runs client-side in your browser, so it starts instantly and stays accurate even if your tab lags.

Breathe normally for a minute, sit down, take one calm ~80% breath in, tap Start, hold your breath through your nose or mouth (whichever is comfortable), and tap Stop the moment you breathe again.

You get your breath-hold time in seconds, a fun tier from Warming Up to Apnea Master, a rough comparative estimate, and a share card. Retake it anytime to track your lungs over weeks.

How the timer stays accurate: the clock uses your device's high-resolution wall clock (performance.now), not the screen animation, so background-tab slowdowns cannot undercount your hold. The progress ring is display-only. Results are measured to 0.1 seconds and your best per mode (full-lung vs empty-lung) is saved in localStorage — never uploaded anywhere.

The two modes measure different things. Full-lung hold (one calm inhale, then hold) is the classic benchmark most people mean by 'how long can you hold your breath' — typical untrained adults land 30–60 seconds. Empty-lung hold (relaxed exhale, then hold) removes the air buffer and tests pure CO₂ tolerance — expect roughly half the time, 15–30 seconds. Both are fair; just compare like with like.

For a fair baseline: test seated, at the same time of day, after 60 seconds of calm nasal breathing, with one 80% inhale. Avoid coffee, heavy meals, hard workouts, colds, or high altitude on test day — each can swing results by ±10 seconds. Log 3 attempts with 2–3 minutes rest and keep the middle value as your baseline.

What the tiers and percentile mean: tiers (Warming Up → Apnea Master) are motivational bands, and the 'better than X%' line is a rough comparative estimate, not measured population data. Treat them as a game layer over your personal trend — the trend over 4–8 weeks is the only number that really matters.

Safety rules are part of how it works: always seated away from water, traffic, and hard edges; never hyperventilate first; stop at dizziness, tingling, or nausea; no repeated max attempts in one session. If you feel shortness of breath at rest, skip the test and see a clinician — this timer is a wellness game, not a diagnosis.

⚠️ Fun benchmark, not a diagnosis. Sit down, never hyperventilate, never test in water. Stop if dizzy.
